The SKUA sails!
Come along when we sail off together, set the sails and let the Baltic Sea wind blow around our noses!
The SKUA is a boat project that was brought to life by former scouts. Together with boat builder friends and craftspeople and with the support of the Museumswerft Greifswald e.V., a boat hull and an idea became a youth sailing boat with which we want to discover the region from the water.
Since 2013, a group of former scouts from the PBN and PBMV have worked on numerous construction weekends and weeks to make the boat seaworthy: sanding, painting, sawing, screwing, planning and much more. In 2022, the time had finally come: the SKUA set the deep red sails for the first time during several test runs in the Greifswald Bodden.
Since 2023, there have been regular trips in the Greifswalder Bodden, around Rügen and Usedom. The boat will continue to travel as a youth sailing boat and explore the Baltic Sea region with teenagers and young adults. It offers space for approx. 6 to 7 people.
The SKUA is a participatory project: young people from the PBMV and other scout associations in particular, but also other young people from the region can get involved. If you would like to get to know the project, the best way to do this is by sailing or at building weekends. If you are interested or would like to register for a sailing trip, please email skua@pbmv.de. Please also get in touch if you would like to be added to the news mailing list.

About the boat
The Skua is a wooden sailing yacht of the Colin-Archer type. This type of boat is characterised by its particular stability and seaworthiness and was mainly used as a rescue or pilot boat at the beginning of the 20th century. The SKUA is a replica of a Colin Archer type, 9.36 metres long and can be sailed by 6 to 7 people. The sails are a traditional gaff rig. You cannot sail ‘alone’ under such a rig, but are always dependent on the co-operation of the group.
